Pre-test
Participants must successfully pass the pre-test before registering for the lifeguard certification course. The pre-test is free.
The pre-test may be taken Dec. 2-19 at 4 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. at the Capodichino Fit Zone Pool.
Register here for the mandatory pre-test by Dec. 18.
The pre-test consists of two requirements:
1. 50-meter swim using front crawl or breaststroke (or a combination of both) without touching the ground or the sides of the pools, then maintain position at the surface of the water for two minutes by treading water using only the legs, floating or both and finally a 50-meter swim using front crawl or breaststroke (or a combination of both) without touching the ground or the sides of the pools.
2. A timed event within 50 seconds, starting in the water swim 20 meters with no goggles, submerge to the bottom of the pool to retrieve a 10-pound brick, return to the surface to swim or walk holding the brick with both hands and exit the water without using the steps or ladder.
Lifeguard class
The course will be delivered using a variety of methods including blended online content (six hours), PowerPoint presentations, guided group discussions, guided group activities and practical demonstrations and training. The course is approximately 23 hours with 60 percent of the course taking place in the water. The American Red Cross Lifeguarding certificate is valid for two years from the date of successful completion of the course. The course will include all elements of pool rescue techniques, lifeguard theory, First Aid, CPR and AED concepts for the professional rescuer. There is a potential location change, if permitted, for deep-water scenarios. If a deep-water facility is not available, participants will be given a provisional certification. This summer, they will be allowed to test in one of the seasonal summer pools to receive the deep-water certification. This will be discussed in class with participants.
